10 Tips for Maximizing Your Cardio Workouts

Small changes to how you warm up, pace and recover turn the same 30 minutes of cardio into a far more effective session.

Warm Up Properly

Before diving into your main workout, spend 5–10 minutes warming up. This gets your blood flowing and prepares your muscles for the intensity ahead.

Mix Up Your Routine

Keep your body guessing by switching up your cardio workouts. Try different machines, classes or outdoor activities to challenge different muscle groups and prevent boredom.

Interval Training

Incorporate intervals of high-intensity bursts followed by periods of lower intensity. This boosts calorie burn and improves cardiovascular fitness in less time. Pay attention to your posture and form throughout.

Set Realistic Goals

Whether it is increasing speed, duration or distance, set achievable goals for your cardio workouts. Track your progress to stay motivated and celebrate what you accomplish.

Add Resistance

Raise the incline on the treadmill, find a hill outside or turn up the resistance on the bike. Working against a load challenges your muscles and burns more energy at the same pace.

Train by Heart Rate

A chest strap or watch tells you whether you are really working as hard as you think. Spend most sessions at a pace where you could still talk in short sentences, and save the all-out efforts for one or two days a week.

Make a Playlist

Music with a strong beat makes the minutes pass faster and helps you keep a steady rhythm. Save your favorite tracks for the hardest intervals.

Fuel and Hydrate

Eat something light an hour or two before a long session and drink water throughout. Running out of energy halfway through is the quickest way to cut a workout short.

Cool Down

Finish with five minutes of easy movement and a few stretches. It brings your heart rate down gradually and leaves you less stiff the next day.

Listen to Your Body

Most importantly, listen to your body’s signals. Push yourself, but know when to dial back if you are feeling fatigued or experiencing pain.
